Electrochromic Book and Notebook


Description


The electrochromic book is a kind of book that looks like ordinary books that have some papers (50, 100 or 400). These papers are empty.
You can plug in your flash memory in the book and then the book shows your texts and shapes. When you want to read another book you can delete previous texts from the book by just clicking a button and then copy the text you want on the book.
Buying this book, needn’t have a lot of books. Only one and you have a library in your hands. Also, it will save many trees.
The electrochromic notebook is also the same. A notebook and a pen. You write on that and the script will be recorded. Buying the product, you have a lot of notebooks at the same time. You choose your notebook on the menu (for instance, math notebook, or physics etc.). Then the notebook shows your previous records and then you continue writing.
Electrochromic materials allow us to build such books and notebooks.
These materials are materials that change their color depending on the applied potential. Then we need papers that contain boards inside. Applying different potentials, the pixel of the paper changes and we have the book. Changing the potential array, the book changes. About the Notebook also the process is the same.
Also, we can give some features to the book, like fading text, etc. (features and arts that Microsoft PowerPoint presents)
There can be two kinds of black and white Electrochromic Book and colorful one.
Also, it can be two kinds of ordinary one or contain a tablet on the cover.
• The Challenge is to make it as real and natural as possible so that the user feels like using ordinary books and notebooks.
The Plan in Detail
One page:
One page consists of many electrochromic cells (for instance, 1 million). Suppose the following figure:

The cells are on a board. The following figure is a cell.


Note: When the voltage implies on a cell, its color changes.All the cells are on a board that addresses electric signals among the cells. Then one cell on board is something like this:
In a paper of this book, there are several of these sells on a board that distributes the voltage between the cells. Suppose the following figure:


This is part of the board that separates the electrochromic cells from each other. This will embed on the voltage distributor.

The outer part embeds on the voltage distributor and the board is ready.
In the end, the electrochromic cells embed on the board and the paper is something like this:The IC distributes voltage on the paper and in this way, the paper shows the text that we want.

And when we want to read another book by implying another voltage we erase the text from the paper.

There are several pages in a book. For instance, 50, 100 or 400 pages. Then the book is like this:


You can plug in your flash in the book and copy your book in the electrochromic book.
• The challenge is to make the papers as thin and as natural as the ordinary papers, as possible. (Now day boards are so thin that make it possible. The boards like the one in the YouTube film I put the link in the text)
• The book can be so that when the user opens a page, the words and shapes begin to appear on the paper. This appearing can be ordinary or begins from the center or a corner.
Just like PowerPoint features that can make the product more attractive.
• Some boxes in the book could be dynamic. Just like flash movies that exist on some websites. For instance, the scene of a stormy sea can be in a box in the book, like a 3-second movie.
Electrochromic Newspaper
The idea is the same with the electrochromic book, but the papers are larger and it contains a receiver that receives the data (texts and shapes) from the newspaper website and every morning it refreshes and shows the daily press.


Electrochromic Banner


This is just like the electrochromic newspaper, but the banners are controlled by a center, (for instance, the one in municipal or in control of the owner of the banner or banners)
Electrochromic Label

Some luxury products can have electrochromic labels that change their writing or shapes just like the electrochromic banners that are controlled from a center.


Electrochromic Notebooks


The idea is similar to the electrochromic book, with a small difference. The purpose is to have a notebook that look likes ordinary notebooks. The user writes his note on the notebook and then can record what he has written. Then he can choose another notebook (one that he has written and recorded before) and the electrochromic notebook shows his previous work and he continues working.
• When he writes his writing prints on the notebook (just like ordinary notebooks) and also it records on the memory.
Electrochromic cells in the electrochromic notebook are something like this:


On each cell, there are some tiny conductive materials. They are Embedded on a board just like the cells in the electrochromic book. There is a pen that has electricity on the point.The conductive materials are distributed on the cell and they transfer electricity. The pen is charged and when it touches the conductive cells, a pulse transfers to the system. This pulse is equivalent to writing on the paper. Then the system records the cell as “written on” and in this way it the note records. Also, the system sends a pulse to the core and implies the corresponding voltage on that, thus consequently the cells color changes and it shows the text the user just wrote on that. Then there is three phase:
1) the pen touch cell and the conductive material send a pulse to the system. (The voltage on the point of the pen is of the special magnitude that the system is sensitive to)
2) the system records the data (text written on the paper)
3) the system sends a pule to the electrochromic cell in order to change its color.
Whenever the user wants, he can erase all texts from the Notebook by just clicking on a bottom that implies a voltage to alter the cells color to their previous color.
• Like the electrochromic books, the challenge is to make the product as natural and looking like the ordinary Notebooks as possible.
• The electrochromic book and notebook can be together in one product. One product that is both electrochromic book and notebook.



Electroactive braille book


There is a kind of smart material that its volume changes by implied voltage. They are called “Electroactive Polymers”.
Using these materials, we can make braille books for blind people that they can use several times, like the electrochromic books. The plan is the same with the electrochromic book, but we replace the “electrochromic cells” with the “electroactive polymers”.
• We can also use the electroactive materials mixed with the electrochromic materials for the cover of the electrochromic books.
In the end, I want to explain about the distributor and the way it works. In fact, this is not new and needn’t be investigated specifically for the project. Already the TV companies are using some methods to distribute voltage among LCD and LED cells in the TVs. As I know, there are two methods, “Passive Matrix Addressing” and “Active Matrix Addressing”. These two methods are known by Electric Engineers and are available.
